F1: Spyker to be called Force India in 2008

As per the latest news, emanating from Brazil, Vijay Mallya wants to rename the Spyker team Force India in 2008. That is so amazing. I also wonder, that alongside his party/glamour side which seems to have taken Vijay Mallya into F1, it might even turn out to be a phenomenal money spinner for the beer man. The obvious thing is, there is so much ad-money available in India looking for suitable avenues to spend it on. Now with the whole India concept coming in to F1, with the track in Delhi coming on as well at the end of the decade, this will be a huge opportunity for advertisers.

On top of all this, if the team/Mallya can secure enough money and talent to make it one of the leading teams in F1 (I’d agree that the chances are remote), then I am willing to contend that F1 will only be second to cricket in terms of commercial success in India. The more I think, the more I am inclined to equate this whole operation with genius. It’s creating an opportunity of a lifetime out of nothing to start with. Well done Mr. Mallya – can I have some super VIP passes for your team-truck?

Twenty20 World Cup India… Yuvraj… and my predictions…

Posted by abyjain on September 21, 2007

Wow! Like so many Indian fans going through their short-lived memories, I can’t remember the last time India got into a late stage of a tournament feeling good about themselves. And of course, being the betting man that I am, I’ve been trying to think if I can predict whats going to happen in the semi-finals or the finals. In line with what one would expect, I’ve got some thoughts, in fact I’ve got many, but I doubt if any one has the time to read them… but some things I’m thinking:

a) India is going to win the semi-finals and the finals – yeah, thats a lot of optimist in me too.

b) Yuvraj is not going to play any more match winning innings in this tournament.

c) Sehwag, Pathan, R P Singh and Gambhir are going to deliver for India

d) It’s going to be an India-Pakistan final.

If 3 out of these four predictions come true… Ferrari are going to win the drivers championship in F1 as well… keep watching!

On one of the betting sites I checked, the last odds were as follows (while the India game was not finished yet, I bet that changed soon after):

Australia – 6/5

South Africa – 11/4

Pakistan – 7/2

New Zealand – 13/2

India – 10 (this later became 6/4 after India threw SA out)

Imagine… and now South Africa is out of the Twenty20 world cup. HA!

And by the way, here are the six sixes by Yuvraj Singh on youtube…

Formula 1 and McLaren disqualification

Posted by abyjain on September 14, 2007

McLaren had been having a nightmare of a time in F1 preceding the 2007 seasons for quite some time. That was also possibly the reason why Mika Hakinnen retired in 2001… also leading to a sad career forward for David Coulthard. For a while, it seemed that there was no challenger to Ferrari till Renault came along and started the era of Fernando Alonso.

Throughout the 2007 season, I have marvelled at the progress McLaren had made. I hate dislike Alonso too much to give him credit for all the progress McLaren had made, and now it seems to be very plausible that the Ferrari dossier helped McLaren achieve much of its progress into 2007.

Everyone would have their take on the decision handed out to McLaren and it would definitely be clouded by our personal preferences, but I am in disagreement with almost everything.

a) Why do the drivers not get penalised at all? Could they have secured any points if the car did not move as fast as it did? (Obviously the assumption here is that it is proven that McLaren derived an advantage from the Ferrari dossier)

b) Why strip them of ALL the constructor championship points? Its not like they would have scored 0 points by themselves. I’m sure they would have scored 20-30! Maybe some formula should have been deployed, like halving it or something. It gives them too easy a way out when it say o points in 2007. It should have said 50,60,70… don’t let them get away with a simple “0” which can be justified by McLaren as a “technical result” or whatever…. you know what I mean?

c) The $100 million fine, seems to be a bit too much. I don’t know how much the teams get as a share of the revenues and what the numbers are like, but $100 million!!! Most teams don’t have a total budget that large, many have a much smaller one. That was a bit too much I think.

Let’s see if there is more to come. And how the hell will they prove they are using no Ferrari know-how in 2008?? That’s a very tough one.

Formula 1 : News Spyker bought by Vijay Mallya and gang, to be called Orange India – F1-Live.com

Posted by abyjain on September 1, 2007

Formula 1 : News Spyker – F1-Live.com

The news in the link above is AMAZING. Vijay Mallya, in his “personal capacity”, has bought the SPYKER F1 team in a joint bid. The new team will be called “Orange India”. Wowwwwww……. makes my heart swell with pride. Wish we had more people like Vijay Mallya. Flamboyance coupled with a little bit of India makes me feel so good.

Of course, a number of drivers will now be hoping to be a part of the team from India and I am sure a lot of Indian corporate money is going to flow into this team. Yippie! Here we come, F1 world. Any guesses on how long before we produce a world champion? I think that one is going to take some time….

From other news articles, like the one here, at business standard, it appears that the team could even be names Kingfisher Ferrari some day! And that Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandok could be frontrunners for the drivers seat. I am so sure that the money problems of the team are really going to be a thing of the past now. 🙂

Formula 1 : News Briatore on the spy saga and Ron Dennis – F1-Live.com

Posted by abyjain on August 7, 2007

Formula 1 : News Briatore – F1-Live.com

Most people in the F1 paddock seem to be of the opinion that McLaren was not as innocent as they claim in this whole spy saga in F1. On the other hand, if there was more to it, I wonder if it is really possible to hide it all. Someone or the other will come out and spill the beans… people are like that… when they are going down, they’d rather take the whole ship down with them. At least 1 or 2 of them will want to… Seems like Renault boss Flavio Briatore feels the most cheated through this whole episode. The Ferrari has a HUGE advantage coming in to the 2007 season with bridgestone tyres on all machines. Seems like McLaren might have derived the biggest chunk of their performance leap from 2006 to 2007 using data such as the ones alluded to below by Mr. Briatore.

“Had I only known Ferrari’s weight distribution, or how big their tank is, if I had a bit of those documents, then we surely wouldn’t be in this situation today,” the Italian Flavio Briatore told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Briatore charged: “Dennis says he’s immaculate, but it’s hard to believe him. No, I don’t believe in his good faith. In a team everyone knows everything.”

Formula 1 : News ALONSO – F1-Live.com

Posted by abyjain on August 5, 2007

Formula 1 : News ALONSO – F1-Live.com

Though it does very little to make up for the Ferrari debacle at Hungary yesterday, this article made me go MHUWAHAHAHAHA…. it’s actually a pity that these two are so competitive that it is creating bad blood. McLaren is definitely on top of their game and have been having quite a good time this year. For Ferrari, it seems like time is gone and we will just have to wait another few months to get our hopes up again.

So much so, that I’m not even that excited to see the race today. Some of the times you hope that your team will fight back and it will be worth watching the race, but more often than not… a bad position only gets worse during the race. Let’s see how it unfolds. On top of all this, my driving classes will make sure I miss the start of the race. 50% of the excitement of a race is packed into the start… not a good thing to have to miss 😦

If Ferrari are going to be so consistent in breaking down their cars… (uniform distribution between the drivers… uniform distribution through the race season) then it’s not going to be much of a fight for McLaren…. is it?

I almost forgot, the best news is that McLaren have “provisionally” been stripped of ANY constructor championship points coming from this race.

MWUAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Formula 1 : Spyker seat not likely for Narain Karthikeyan- F1-Live.com

Posted by abyjain on July 26, 2007

From the link below, it seems unlikely that Narain Karthikeyan will get the Spyker Ferrari seat vacated recently. It’s a little disappointing cos it would be so much fun to see Narain race in F1 again and especially good if he can be in the top 10 in F1. Well… I’m guessing we’ll have someone in sooner or later with motorsports really starting to pick interest in India as well as India looking for an entry into the F1 calendar in a couple of years.

Formula 1 : News SPYKER – F1-Live.com

The most amazing part of the article is this – Kolles problem is that while Williams test driver Karthikeyan can promise a raft of sponsors, team chiefs including Mike Gascoyne are pushing for Klien — who is not substantially backed.

Pray, pray…. perhaps the new financial muscle of India is going to get us what we want to see.

Mercedes ad featuring the competition between Alonso and Hamilton

Posted by abyjain on July 23, 2007

Nice piece of work from Mercedes using the hype around the competition between Hamilton and Alonso.

Damn, these guys are doing well right now. I wish Ferrari would first just get their reliability sorted out. Seems to me that Raikonnen has a thing like Montoya… their cars just keep breaking down!!!
